Some people come to Cobra Command in Basehor to get in shape. Amelia came for something a little different. She came for people to fight alongside.
A stroke can change everything in an instant. Amelia’s left side took the brunt of damage and she has suffered with long term issues. The everyday things, the ones the rest of us never think twice about, became work. Big work.
She did what you’re supposed to do. Physical therapy. Occupational therapy. Month after month of showing up and relearning her own body one small win at a time. And she made real progress.
But therapy has a finish line. One day you graduate. The appointments end, the structure disappears, and you’re standing there with a choice. You can coast on what you rebuilt and hope it holds. Or you can keep going. The trouble is, when therapy ends, a lot of people have nowhere designed to keep going.
Amelia decided to keep going, and she went looking for that place.
Why she chose a gym
When Amelia graduated from PT and OT, she didn’t want to lose what she’d fought so hard to get back. She wanted to keep building. And she understood something a lot of people miss: recovery isn’t a phase you finish, it’s a fitness you maintain. Strength you stop training is strength you start losing.
So she went looking for a place to keep doing the work. Not a clinic. A community. Somewhere she could push hard, be coached, and be surrounded by people who show up the same way she does.
She found the Adaptive Athletes in Motion program at Cobra Command. Amelia came to us through our partnership with Bloc Life, the organization we work with to bring real adaptive coaching to athletes of all abilities. She fit right in, because AAIM was built for exactly what she was looking for. Real training. Real coaching. Real people next to her.
A genuine powerhouse
In the gym, Amelia is a powerhouse. Full stop.
She pushes hard. She prioritizes consistency over everything, which anyone serious about results will tell you is the whole ballgame. She still faces real challenges with her lower extremities (especially her left side), with balance, with coordination. Those things didn’t vanish. But they don’t run the show either. She shows up and she does the work anyway.
You’ll find her in our AAIM class most Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 10:30 AM, right in the mix with everyone else. Doing the work.
What she’s really training for
What makes Amelia’s why land is this. When she started, she trained to get stronger for her kids. That reason still holds, but it has grown. These days she’ll tell you she trains for something even bigger: to live a long life and do all the things she wants to do in it.
That’s the thing about strength that a lot of gyms forget to mention. It’s rarely just about the gym. For Amelia, every bit of balance she reclaims, every ounce of coordination and strength she builds, cashes out somewhere in her real life. In how she moves through her days. In what she can do with her kids and for her kids. Strength you build here, you spend out there.
The point of all of it
We tell people fitness is for everyone, and Amelia is what that looks like when a place is actually built to back it up. She had the drive. What she needed was somewhere designed to keep coaching her after the appointments ended. That’s what AAIM is.
That is Courage and Commitment, two of our three core values, wearing gym shoes.
We are so proud to have Amelia in our community. And we’re proud that AAIM was here and ready when therapy ended and she was looking for what comes next.
If you or someone you love is coming out of an injury, a diagnosis, or a long recovery and wondering what’s next, this is your invitation.
