Kayla and Jeremy Smith did not plan on becoming the kind of CrossFit couple who PR their lifts together, train four to five days a week, and add a personal training session every month to chase new skills.
They just said yes to a friend.
A year ago, their friend Krissy invited them to come try a class during Free Community Workout Week. They came. They tried it. They didn’t run for the door. And now, twelve months in, they’re a year-round example of what happens when you accept the invitation and let the work compound.
This is their story, because their story is the best argument I can make for walking into Cobra Command during Free Community Workout Week, June 1 through June 6.
How it started
Kayla and Jeremy were already active. They worked out. But they knew they could be doing more, specifically more weight training, and they hadn’t found the right place to do it.
They were two adults with full lives and the same quiet itch a lot of active adults carry around: knowing the current routine is fine but not building anything, suspecting strength is the missing piece, and quietly assuming most gyms wouldn’t be the right fit anyway.
Krissy was already a Cobra member. She knew the room. She knew the coaches. And she knew Kayla and Jeremy would do well here if they could just get over the first-class hurdle.
So she invited them.
That’s the whole start of this story. A friend with a free pass and a willingness to drag two people into a workout they didn’t sign up for.
By the end of the week, the Smiths were in. They didn’t want to go back to figuring it out on their own.
What a year of consistent CrossFit looks like
Here’s what the Smiths’ training looks like a year later.
Both Kayla and Jeremy are on hybrid memberships. They hit four to five group classes a week, plus a 30-minute personal training session every single month with their coach.
That’s not a casual commitment. That’s the rhythm of two people who built training into their actual lives.
Their personal training sessions are where the skill work happens. Snatches. Clean and jerks. Pull-ups. Movements that scare most adults the first time they see them on a whiteboard, and movements that the Smiths are now actively working toward and competing with each other on.
Both of them have PR’d their major lifts this year. Their squat numbers, their pulls, their presses. The kind of numbers that don’t move unless you’re showing up consistently and getting real coaching on form.
And Kayla, specifically, has hit body composition goals she’s been chasing for years. Not a six-week sprint. Not a crash diet. Body composition change that came from a year of consistent training, smart nutrition, and a coach who could actually see her, not just her workout log.
This is what twelve months of coaching-first training looks like in practice.
Why I’m telling you this story right now
Because Free Community Workout Week is one week away.
The Smiths came from last year’s Community Week. They are not an outlier. They are the pattern. Adults walk in for a free class, find out they actually like it, decide to stick, and a year later they look back at the version of themselves who almost didn’t come and wonder what took so long.
You could be writing your own version of this story twelve months from now.
The Bring a Friend angle
The detail in the Smith story I want you to sit with is Krissy.
Krissy didn’t change Kayla and Jeremy’s life. She just invited them. She made the call, sent the text, said “come with me,” and held the door open.
That’s the entire ask of Free Community Workout Week. We’re not asking you to convert anyone. We’re asking you to open the door for one friend, the way Krissy did.
If you’re already a Cobra member, pick the friend you’ve been quietly thinking about for months and send them the link this week. If you’re not a member yet, and someone has been telling you about this gym, this is your sign to say yes.
What to do next
Free Community Workout Week runs June 1 through June 6. Every class is free. CrossFit, HYROX, Semi-Private, and Kids. Reserve your spot, pick your class, and walk in.
Reserve your spot here: https://cobracommandcrossfit.gymleadmachine.co/events-6963
If you have a friend, bring them. The Smiths will tell you it works.
I’ll be at the gym all week. So will your future coach. So will the people who’ll know your name a year from now.
See you in the gym.
