How to Train for HYROX in Basehor, Ks (and Why Cobra Command Is the Place to Do It)

obra Command is an Official HYROX Training Club in Basehor, KS, led by certified HYROX coach Jarrad Glasenapp. Here's how to start training, and how to try it free during Community Week June 1–6.

If you’ve been wondering how to actually train for a HYROX race in the Kansas City area, here’s the short answer.

You need a coach who knows the race. You need a program that builds the engine and the strength a HYROX day demands. You need a community of athletes who are training for the same thing. And you need a way to start that doesn’t require you to be in HYROX shape on day one.

That’s what we built at Cobra Command. Here’s how it works.

Cobra is an Official HYROX Training Club

Not every gym can call itself an Official HYROX Training Club. The designation is earned, not bought. It means we’ve been vetted by HYROX, that our coaches have completed the certification process, and that we run HYROX programming the way HYROX wants it run.

There are only a handful of Official HYROX Training Clubs in the Kansas City area. Cobra is one of them.

That matters when you’re picking a place to train. You can train HYROX-style at a lot of gyms. You can only train inside the HYROX system at an Official HYROX Training Club. The difference shows up on race day.

Your HYROX coach: Jarrad Glasenapp

Jarrad runs our HYROX program. He’s a HYROX Foundations coach and he’s run multiple HYROX races himself. That second piece matters more than you might think.

The best coaching for any race comes from someone who has actually stood on the start line, run the stations, hit the wall at the 6K run, and figured out how to push through it. Jarrad has. He coaches our HYROX athletes from a place of real race experience, not just textbook programming.

If you’ve ever had a coach explain something to you and immediately think “you’ve never actually done this,” that’s not a problem you’ll have here.

How we structure HYROX training

HYROX training at Cobra is built across three layers.

Layer 1: General fitness foundation. Most of our HYROX athletes also train CrossFit. CrossFit is one of the strongest ways to build the engine, the strength, and the mental toughness a HYROX race demands. The compromise athletes who try to train HYROX with only sled pushes and 1K runs always plateau. The ones who keep their general fitness sharp keep getting faster.

Layer 2: HYROX-specific work. We run dedicated HYROX classes that cover the eight stations in the format the race uses. Sled push, sandbag lunges, wall balls, burpee broad jumps, rowing, skiing, farmer’s carry, and the 1K runs that string everything together. We program in race-pace work, we simulate transitions, and we build the specific capacity the race tests.

Layer 3: Race-specific peaking. When a member has a race on the calendar, we adjust their training to peak for it. That’s where our coaching staff shines. We’ve taken members from “I just signed up for my first HYROX” to “I crushed my first HYROX.” Kathy is the obvious recent example. There are others.

HYROX-specific memberships

For athletes who want to focus specifically on HYROX, we offer HYROX-specific memberships. These plug into our HYROX class schedule and give you the structured race prep without committing to full CrossFit programming.

For athletes who want both, our Hybrid memberships work well too. CrossFit classes most days, HYROX-specific days mixed in. That’s how most of our HYROX athletes train, and it’s the structure we’ve seen produce the most consistent race results.

If you’re not sure which is right for you, that’s what the No Sweat Intro is for. Tell us your goals, your race plans (if any), and your schedule. We’ll recommend the right path.

Free Community Week: June 1 through June 6

The easiest way to find out if Cobra is the right place for you is to come try it. Free.

One more thing

We’re not the cheapest gym in Basehor. We’re not trying to be.

We’re the gym where you actually finish your first HYROX. The gym where Kathy walked in cold and crossed a finish line in Dallas 3 months later. The gym where 40 people showed up on a Saturday morning to push themselves through a Half HYROX, and every single one of them finished.

If that’s the kind of training environment you’ve been looking for, come see it for yourself.

Free Community Week is June 1 through June 6. We’ll see you in the gym.
