If you’ve been thinking about kids fitness classes in Basehor… but you keep circling back to the same worry:
“Isn’t lifting going to stunt his growth?”
“He’s only seven.”
“Aren’t they too young for weights?”
We hear some version of this almost every week. And you’re asking a completely fair question that tons of parents have concern with… but your mostly worried about a myth.
Where That Myth Actually Came From
The growth plate myth (stunted growth) traces back to a handful of old studies. Every single one of them looked at kids who got hurt doing max lifts with zero supervision.
That’s not strength training. That’s a kid alone in a garage with his dad’s barbell. Nothing like what your kiddo would walk into here at Cobra Command.
The American Academy of Pediatrics and the National Strength and Conditioning Association both say: Supervised strength training is safe for kids. And it’s actually good for them.
Your kiddo is at more risk on the backyard trampoline than in our 5:15PM kids class. Seriously.
But Here’s What We’re Actually Doing With Your Six Year Old
Let’s start with… if you pictured a row of six year olds under barbells, you can let that go right now.
For our kids class, ages 5-9, a kid walks in and spends an hour climbing, hanging, jumping, crawling, and carrying weird heavy stuff across the floor. If you watched from the door you’d swear it was organized recess. Will they do some weight lifting to learn proprioception and basic technique? Sure. But really it’s introductory and designed to help them move optimally.
And that’s the point.
So what are we actually building in your kiddo?
Coordination. Can they get their arms and legs doing two different jobs at once? Most kiddos can’t at first. It’s learnable… and that window gets narrower as they get older.
Body awareness. Knowing where your body is without looking at it. Sounds simple until you watch your seven year old try to hold a hollow position.
Following a cue in a group. This one has nothing to do with fitness. And you’ll probably notice it at home before you notice it here.
The idea that hard things are fun. Not tolerable. Fun.
Weight comes in light, and it comes late. A 5 year old in our class will use the tiniest kettlebells and 5lb dumbbells. An 8 year old might pick up an eight pound dumbbell. Will they squat, hinge, press and pull? Heck yes, and likely better than any adult you know. But it won’t be heavy… because load just isn’t what a kiddo that age needs yet.
Ask Your Kid What They Learned… You’ll Get a Blank Stare
Ask a seven year old what they did in class and you’ll hear “we did the crab walk relay and Coach let us climb the rope.”
Ask them what they learned? Nothing. Blank stare.
Meanwhile they just spent an hour on midline stability, grip strength, and coordinated movement. And that’s the trade we make on purpose. They get the game. We get the adaptation.
What Shows Up Later
Most parents come to us for one of two reasons. Either their kiddo is already in a sport and they want an edge… or their kiddo isn’t in anything and they want them off the couch.
Both work. But the good stuff shows up somewhere you’re not watching for it.
The sport part is real. A kid who can land under control and change direction is a kid who doesn’t get hurt in week six. Ask any coach in Basehor. They’ll tell you the same thing about kids who move well versus kids who are just fast.
But the one you’ll notice a year from now is different. Your kiddo tries hard things.
They lost a race, or failed a lift, or came in dead last in a relay… and it didn’t wreck them. We don’t teach that directly. It just happens when a kiddo fails at something small twice a week, in a room where nobody makes it a big deal.
Let Me Be Straight About What This Isn’t
It’s not childcare. We coach the class, it’s structured, and we’re going to expect your kiddo to listen and try.
And it’s not going to turn your kiddo into an elite athlete on its own. Two hours a week is a supplement. If anybody promises you more than that, be suspicious.
And some kids just don’t love it. Usually the ones who wanted a ball and a scoreboard. That’s totally fine… and you deserve to hear that now instead of after you’ve bought a membership your kid never uses.
Ready to Just Come See It?
Our Cobra Kids season is running RIGHT NOW. Tuesdays + Thursdays, 5:15PM for kids 5-9 Years Old and 6:30PM for kids 10-14 Years Old.
Spots are limited on purpose. We keep the groups small enough that your kiddo actually gets coached instead of just watched.
So book a No Sweat Intro, bring your kiddo, and let them try a class. You’ll know in about twenty minutes… and honestly, so will they.
