Absolutely she can. Even better, she can lose body fat and build muscle AT. THE. SAME. TIME. and we have the metric data to prove it.
You already know we are deep in nutrition talk at Cobra Command in Basehor this month, with our 90 Day Nutrition Cycle starting Tuesday, Sept 8th. But this question comes up in almost every No Sweat Intro I sit down for with a woman over 45, and it is usually phrased like an apology: “I know it’s probably too late for me, but⦔
Hear me loud and clear… IT ISN’T TOO LATE. And to prove it, I pulled Christie’s numbers, because her results can answer this better than I can.
Christie’s Numbers
Christie is 54 Years Old. I like to call her the powerlifting Grandma. She joined Cobra Command 18 months ago in our small group training sessions. And she started losing some weight. Then, 13 months ago, she jumped into nutrition coaching too…. and over those 13 months she went from 210 pounds to 184. Her body fat dropped from 45% to 36%⦠and she GAINED skeletal muscle while she did it.
Why Everybody Tells You It Gets Impossible When we’re older
You’ve heard all of it. As you age your metabolism slows down. Hormones change. Muscle starts to disappear. Nothing works the way it did at 30.
Some of that is real, and I’m not going to pretend otherwise.
But here’s what’s actually happening. Estrogen does a lot of quiet work in a woman’s body, and one of its jobs is helping you build and hold muscle. When it drops off in perimenopause/menopause, your body gets less responsive to the same training stimulus⦠you have to give it a much clearer signal to get the same answer (strength training is a GREAT way to do that!). Estrogen loss also changes where fat gets stored, which is why so many women tell me their body composition shifted before their weight ever did.
So yes, it gets harder. But harder and impossible are not the same word. And most women over 50 have never actually tried the thing that works. They’ve tried eating less and doing more cardio, which is the exact combination that strips muscle and does it faster after menopause because of hormone changes.
What Christie Did Differently
She lifted. Really lifted, consistently, for the last 18 months. Attending small group training 3 days a week, lifting near failure a handful of times a week.
She ate enough protein, which for most women over 50 means a good deal more than they’re currently eating. This is the single biggest gap I see. Most women come to me eating somewhere around half of what they’d need to hold onto the muscle they already have, let alone build any.
And she didn’t crash. 26 pounds across 13 months is about 2 pounds a month, slow enough that it never tripped her nervous system alarm. Her body felt safe enough to let the fat go instead of breaking down muscle for fuel.
That’s it. Enough protein, enough food, and real lifting, done consistently for over a year.
Why the Muscle Matters More Than the Weight
If you only have room for one thing today, make it this one.
At 54, the muscle Christie gained is worth more than the 26 pounds she lost.
Muscle is what keeps your bones dense, which is the difference between a stumble and a broken hip at 75. It’s what keeps your metabolism from dropping a little more every single year. And it’s what lets you pick up a grandkid, carry your own luggage, and get off the floor without thinking about it first.
You can absolutely lose weight and get frailer doing it. Plenty of women do, and the scale applauds them if you are only looking for weight loss. Christie got smaller AND stronger, and only one of those two is going to matter in twenty years. She also looks and feels better than she has in years, which she’ll tell you herself.
The Number That Surprised Her
Christie’s body fat went from 45% to 36%.
She lost 26 pounds on the scale. But she lost closer to 29 pounds of actual fat⦠because she was adding muscle underneath the whole time.
That’s the part a bathroom scale will never show you. There were absolutely weeks where she’d have been convinced nothing was happening at all. The scan told a completely different story, every single time.
“BUt I’m Not an Athlete”
Neither was Christie when she started.
She wasn’t chasing a competition or a beach photo. She wanted to feel strong, and she wanted to stop feeling like her body was getting away from her.
Our nutrition clients range from 19 to 65 right now. A few came in as athletes. Most of them came in tired, frustrated, and pretty sure they’d already tried everything there was to try.
Want to see where you are ACTUALLY starting?
Our 90 Day Nutrition Cycle starts the week of September 8th and runs through the first week of December. Christie was 53 when she started. You are not behind.
Nutrition coaching is $89 every 2 weeks. Same price whether you already train at Cobra or you’ve never set foot in the building.
Want the strength training too? Nutrition PLUS unlimited CrossFit is $170 every 2 weeks. If you’re already a member that’s just an upgrade to the Founders Membership. If you’re new, there’s a one-time $388 to get started, which covers 4x 1:1 Fundamentals sessions (to help you learn proper form & technique) and your first nutrition block.
Either way you get a plan built for your body, weekly coaching and accountability, and InBody scans so you can actually see what’s changing.
And at the end of the 90 days, you choose. Keep going, or move to whatever membership fits your life from there. Our goal is that you walk out knowing how to do this on your own.
Book a No Sweat Intro at Cobra Command and we’ll get you scanned.
