When you walk into the 6 a.m. class at Cobra Command CrossFit, you’ll find a group of determined individuals getting after their goals before most of the world has poured their first cup of coffee. Among them is a quiet but consistent presence—Mary Thompson. She may not be the loudest voice in the room, but her story echoes loudly throughout the walls of our gym.
Mary first stepped through the doors of Cobra Command in October 2022, and she hasn’t looked back since. At the time, she was already living an active lifestyle. A long-time cyclist, Mary was no stranger to movement. She often biked up to 15 miles a day, but she had never lifted a barbell, never done a pull-up, and had never set foot into a CrossFit gym. The idea of joining a space like ours was, admittedly, intimidating.
What got her through the doors wasn’t just curiosity—it was something deeply personal. Mary had spent years on the sidelines of fitness competitions hosted by her son and daughter-in-law, cheering them on and helping with scorekeeping. These competitions raised money for local animal shelters, and while she loved supporting them, she began to wonder, Could I do that too?
Still, fear lingered. The fear of failing. The fear of trying something new at a stage in life when many people think change is no longer possible. She didn’t tell anyone—not even her kids. “If I start something, I don’t quit,” Mary said, “But I was afraid I wasn’t going to be able to do this.”
But she walked in anyway.
Alone. At 6 a.m. Ready to face the unknown.
Mary chose Cobra Command after looking at our social media. What stood out to her were the real women doing real work. No filters. No intimidation. Just effort and support. Her son recognized the names of our coaching team—Jill, Tiffany, and Vince—and immediately said, “That’s where you need to go.”
The early days weren’t easy. Mary will tell you that herself. Even a 10-pound wall ball felt like a mountain. She had never touched a barbell before. The rig seemed completely out of reach. But she didn’t let those things stop her.
Instead, she leaned into the struggle. She embraced the coaching. She let herself fail, learn, grow, and come back stronger the next day. And she didn’t just commit to fitness—she joined our nutrition coaching program too. Like so many of us, she thought she knew how to eat healthy. But through our structured, personalized nutrition support, Mary learned how to fuel her body for performance and recovery. The result? A dramatic improvement in her strength, energy, and confidence.
Her transformation wasn’t just physical. It impacted every area of her life.
As a comptroller in a leadership role at work, Mary says CrossFit has made her more patient and more humble. She now leads her team with greater awareness and empathy, understanding that growth comes from stepping outside your comfort zone. At home, her kids and grandkids have taken notice. Once her children found out about her training, they were amazed. She’s competed in the CrossFit Open three times.
A grandmother now keeping up with her grandkids. A leader who has embraced the mindset of a student. A woman who started quietly and became the silent rock of the 6 a.m. crew.
Her impact is bigger than she knows. She’s not just showing up for herself. She’s showing others what’s possible.
She’s done yoga, tackled mud runs, attended community events, and built friendships that go beyond the walls of the gym. And while she used to doubt whether she could lift the barbell, she now hears her coaches saying, “Put more weight on it, Mary.”
Because she can. And she does.
Coach Dave put it best: “I’ve watched Mary go from hesitant to unshakably steady, from unsure to resilient and bold.”
So, what can you learn from Mary’s journey?

The 6 a.m. crew isn’t just a class. It’s a tribe. It’s the place where you find support, accountability, and friendships that lift you up when the bar feels heavy. - Fitness Should Make Life Better
